Leila
Wilcox, winner of Channel 4's 'Make Me A Million,'
speaks to YEM about how winning the show accelerated
her entrepreneurial ambition, and how parents nationwide
love her organic kids' products.
24-year
old mum Leila Wilcox comes from a family of entrepreneurs. "My
grandad started his own business, which is quite
successful, my dad followed suit and went into
the family business. I never wanted to go into
it; I
wanted to start my own.
I
fell pregnant at 23, which was quite a shock to
the system. During my
pregnancy
I had a variety of jobs from selling cars, to
recruitment consultancy, but nothing was enough
for me.

When
my son was born, I just knew I had to do something for
his sake, to make him proud of me so that I could be
proud of myself and be happy."
Leila
began buying cars at auctions and selling them on at
a healthy profit. She even had a go at being
an ebay Entrepreneur. "They were
both lifestyle businesses and neither was enough. I really needed something
to challenge me but I never had the confidence to believe I could achieve
something great on my own."
When
Channel 4 advertised for potential entrepreneurs to audition
for a new TV show, Leila knew that this could be her
big break, "I always wanted to start my own business
but never got round to it or had the confidence, I was
always trying to think of things, which just never happened.
One day I was flipping through the paper and there was
a tiny article which said Channel 4 were producing a
new series called 'Make Me A Million' where it sees wannabe
entrepreneurs mentored for a year by someone who is already
established in business.
The second I read it I grabbed the phone and called Channel 4. I was
the first person to audition, funnily enough, because I had applied before
the adverts went out in all the papers. They asked me whether I had a
business idea and very much encouraged me to go with a few different
ideas so I went with about 15!"
